Gov. Greg Abbott isn’t offering congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden, but he does have kind words for the next speaker of the Texas House, Dade Phelan.
“A strong conservative, Dade has a proven record of fighting for the lives and livelihoods of all Texans, having played a key role in authoring and passing critical legislation to bolster disaster relief and preparedness following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey,” said Abbott. “I look forward to working with him and all members of the House on common sense, conservative legislation to create an even brighter future for the people of Texas.”
Abbott’s statement of congratulations stands in stark contrast to Texas GOP Party Chair Allen West’s email about Phelan to party faithful Monday morning. West called Phelan a “political traitor” and said the party would not support him.
Phelan has the support of the majority of the GOP House Caucus as well as numerous House Democrats, making him the heir apparent to replace retiring speaker Dennis Bonnen.
