A total of 710 people voted on the first day of early voting in the special election to succeed Sylvia Garcia as the Texas State Senator for District 6. Early voting continues through Friday, December 7. Election Day is Tuesday, December 11.
Of the voters, 373 people voted in person and 337 ballots were mailed in, according to Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart.
Senate District 6 became vacant when Garcia resigned after being elected to Congress on November 6th, and Gov. Greg Abbott set a special election. The district includes parts of Houston, Baytown, Pasadena, Jacinto City and other parts of east and southeast Harris County. The SD-6 special election winner will complete Garcia’s four-year term, which expires in 2021.
Candidates in the race include Ana Hernandez (D-Houston), who represents House District 143; Carol Alvarado (D – Houston) who represents House District 145; Martha Fierro, a Harris County Republican Precinct Chair (Pct. 72) and former nurse; and Democrat Mia Mundy, an executive search consultant.
Reform Austin will follow the results of the election and report which candidate garners the most votes after December 11. If no candidate earns 50 percent or more on December 11, a runoff will be held several weeks later.
