On the Road for Governor? Beto O’Rourke is on a Statewide Democracy Tour

As part of his “Texas Rally for our Voting Rights”, former United States Representative Beto O’Rourke has hit the road to fight this Legislature’s infamous voter suppression bill.

Beto had previously hinted at a run for governor in 2022 in the given case he defeats the bill. “If we can get this done… I’ll think about what other role I can play in public service whether that is as a candidate in 2022 or supporting great candidates in 2022,” O’Rourke told KXAN.

GOP’s Senate Bill 7 would have restricted 24-hour voting, drive-thru voting, and voting on Sunday mornings; tightened the rules for voting by mail, and increased access for partisan poll watchers.

However, SB 7 was stopped by Texas Democrats who staged a walk-out right before the bill could be passed, blocking the Republican priority to restrict voting by leaving the chamber without the needed quorum.

O’Rourke will be touring Texas in what seems to be the last attempt in the fight against GOP determination to restrict voting in the upcoming special session.

But besides defending voters’ rights, Beto’s road adventure has also raised questions on his real intentions for 2022, will this be the warm-up tour before the big run? We are yet to see.
