Justice Department to Monitor Voting in Two Texas Counties

The U.S. Justice Department has put Harris and Waller counties on its Election Day watch list for compliance with federal voting rights laws. The department is also available to take complaints from the public regarding possible voting rights violations.

“Our federal laws protect the right of all American citizens to vote without suffering discrimination, intimidation, and harassment,” said Eric S. Dreiband, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.

Harris and Waller counties are among 44 jurisdictions in 18 states where the justice department will have monitors stationed.

In addition, personnel will be available all day Tuesday to receive complaints from the public via the department’s website at https://civilrights.justice.gov/ or by a toll-free telephone call to 800-253-3931.

If you have complaints about enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act, call the toll-free ADA information line at 800-514-0301 or 800-514-0383 (TDD), or submit a complaint through a link on the department’s ADA website, at https://www.ada.gov/.

Complaints related to disruption at a polling place should always be reported immediately to local election officials.

Complaints about violence, threats of violence or intimidation at a polling place should be reported immediately to local police by calling 911. These complaints should also be reported to the Justice Department after local authorities have been contacted.
