Rep. Jasmine Crockett Pushes Harris Support In North Carolina

U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Dallas is campaigning in North Carolina in an effort to encourage voters to support Vice President Kamala Harris.

Crockett is hoping to raise turnout among the Black community in North Carolina, which is one of the seven battleground states in this electoral cycle. She has already appeared on Harris’ behalf in Georgia, South Carolina and other states with a considerable proportion of black voters.

At a Delta Sigma Theta – a national sorority group– event at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Crockett encouraged supporters to increase voter turnout.

“I need you to talk to the Uber driver. I need you to talk to the unhoused person. I need you to talk to the person that may not believe that they have access to the ballot box because they’ve been criminally justice impacted,” she said.

With just one term in the Congress, Crockett has already gained national attention with her sharp-tongue, and her use of comedy and alliteration to roast Republicans. She gained a lot of popularity when Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene told Crockett that her “fake eyelashes” affected her ability to read. Committee chairman James Comer ruled that the remark didn’t violate rules against personal attacks.

To clarify limits on personal attacks Crockett asked: 

“If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach-blond, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?” she said.

At the recent events, Crockett also took the opportunity to attack North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, a Republican backed by Donald Trump who is running for governor. In September CNN reported that more than a decade ago, Robinson made several remarks on a pornographic site supporting slavery, self-identifying as a “perv,” and a “Black Nazi.”

“There was no way I was going to come to North Carolina and not clown this fool,” Crockett said. “It’s laughable, but it’s also scary, because you have a man that is running to be the governor of your state that thinks it’s cute to talk about bringing slavery back.”

“He’s got a lot of struggles on his hands,” she added. “We just need to pray for him and send him on home.”

Attendants told the Dallas Morning News that they expect the state to turn blue again. North Carolina voted for Barack Obama in 2008, but returned for Republicans in 2012 and 2016.

According to polling average estimates made by FiveThirtyEight, currently Trump leads Harris by an average of 1 percentage point.

“We have been tagged as one of the battleground states,” Katrina Jones Young, president of the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta said. “North Carolina has been a red state. We turned blue for Obama, and it’s time for us to turn blue again.”
