Texas Leads Nation in Accidental Drownings

Recent data released by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services found 44 children under the age of 15 have drowned in Texas this year.

Just last week, 3 children drowned in North Texas – a 5-year-old in Fort Worth and a 5- and 6-year-old in Mansfield. Additionally, Fort Worth Medical Center reported it treated 22 drowning-related injuries, an all-time high since June 2017.

Texas led the nation with the highest number of accidental drownings during the first half of this year, and health officials are concerned that the problem is only going to get worse.

According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among children between the ages of 1 and 4.

With children having missed out on swimming lessons during the 2020 quarantine, it is vital that parents pay extra attention to practicing water safety with their kids. For more information on pool safety, click here.
