Trump’s 100 Days: Historic Low Approval Amid Economic Struggles

As President Donald Trump marks his 100-day milestone in office, his approval rating has reached a historic low, dropping to just 39%, the lowest level seen in nearly 80 years, according to a recent poll by ABC News. This represents a significant decrease from 45% earlier this year, with 55% of Americans now expressing disapproval of his leadership. When compared to his approval rating of 42% at this time during his 2017 term, it is evident that Trump’s support has waned considerably. 

Despite this widespread disapproval, particularly concerning his economic and policy decisions, Trump still holds an edge over Congressional Democrats in handling the nation’s key issues. He maintains a degree of trust among Americans, holding a 37%-30% advantage. However, this support comes amid growing dissatisfaction with the state of the economy. 72% of Americans report that the economy is in bad shape, and many fear that Trump’s policies could lead to a looming recession. 

Inflation, a key issue Trump promised to control, remains a significant concern for many. With 62% of Americans reporting that prices continue to rise, it is clear that inflation is one of the persistent problems his administration has struggled to address. His tariffs, which Trump argued would benefit the economy in the long term, are widely seen as a contributing factor to inflation, with 71% of respondents viewing them negatively. Only 31% said they accept Trump’s argument that the economy will emerge with a stronger foundation for the long term.

While Trump’s approval on key issues remains negative, his base remains staunchly supportive. Among Republicans, 83% approve of his job performance, with over half expressing strong approval. However, this support is not reflected across the broader political spectrum, as 93% of Democrats and 60% of independents disapprove of his leadership. The continuing divide within the electorate underscores the polarized state of American politics, with Trump’s support remaining strong among non-college-educated white men, a key demographic. However, even this group is showing signs of decline, as 43% now believe the economy has worsened under his leadership.
