Lack Of Beds In Houston Hospitals Causes 11-month-old Baby With Covid To Be Airlifted 150 Miles

Diagnosed with COVID-19, an 11-month-old baby from Texas had to be transported by air ambulance after Houston hospitals reported bed shortages.

The girl, who was transferred to Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple, needed to be intubated as she experienced seizures, but seems to be steadily improving according to the medical personnel.

Hospitals have been seeing an increase of COVID-19 cases in kids and babies, which experts say is mainly due to the delta variant, found to be more aggressive and more contagious.

“With the delta variant we certainly are seeing just more infectivity across the population that includes kids. That includes infants as well,” said Dominic Lucia, pediatric emergency doctor and chief medical officer. “And with this particular surge we are seeing more kids that are symptomatic that test positive, more babies that are symptomatic and test positive.”

With kids going back to school and executive orders prohibiting mask mandates, health authorities have expressed concern over the threat of outbreaks in schools.”It is typical that two weeks after school we see a great surge of strep and other sources of infection. We are bracing ourselves, not a question of when, it will be bad,” said Dr. Christina Propst, one of the most outspoken pediatricians in Houston.
