Elon Musk’s Tesla Is Under Federal Investigation For Crash Involving Full Self-Driving System

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it is investigating Elon Musk’s Tesla for its Full Self-driving (FSD) system for a series of crashes that have killed at least one person.

The NHTSA announced it was investigating the EV company over “failure of the system engineering controls to react appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions.” According to Axios, the investigation is related to four reports of collisions involving vehicles using Tesla’s FSD systems in “reduced roadway visibility.”

One of these incidents resulted in a death after a Tesla vehicle fatally hit a pedestrian. In addition, another collision left one person injured.

The probe will examine the FDS system’s “potential failure to detect and disengage in specific situations where it cannot adequately operate, and the extent to which it can act to reduce risk,” a NHTSA spokesperson told Axios. In addition, the investigation will also ascertain whether any other crashes have occurred using the FSD system.

So far, the investigation will cover 2.4 million Tesla vehicles, including models S, X, Y, and the Cybertruck. Most of these cars are currently on the roads.

This investigation comes a week after Musk presented his new idea of a “Cybercab”, a new type of robotaxi. Musk has a long history of delivering promises that ends in flawed results. After the presentation, Tesla’s shares fell by nearly 8 percent.
