Abbott and Paxton Slam “Sham Trial” After Trump’s Felony Conviction

Yesterday, former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts by a New York jury, and Texas GOP leaders have already called the trial a “sham” and called on President Joe Biden to be fired.

In various social media posts, letters, and statements, Texas GOP leaders questioned the trial and the justice system, and blamed Biden for prosecuting Trump.

“The Kangaroo Court will never stand on appeal. Americans deserve better than a sitting U.S. President weaponizing our justice system against a political opponent— all to win an election. We must FIRE Joe Biden in November” Gov. Greg Abbott posted on X/Twitter.

Although he blamed the Biden administration for Trump’s trial, the grand jury and prosecutors were from New York and the trial took place in a state court independent of the White House, Kut News noted.

Trump was found guilty of all 34 charges that accused him of falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment to a porn actor to illegally influence the 2016 election. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a felony.

“From the beginning of this sham trial, I stood by President Trump, and my support for him is stronger than ever,” Attorney General Ken Paxton wrote in a letter posted on X/Twitter. “As Attorney General of Texas, I will unleash every tool at my disposal to fight this blatant corruption and political persecution spewing from New York and the Biden administration.”

However, Kut News noted that Paxton’s efforts to help Trump have been futile before. He previously launched an unsuccessful attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and was later disciplined by the State Bar of Texas.

“If the justice system can do this to a former president, it can do it to anyone in America,” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick wrote. “That should frighten every American. New York & Biden have turned our country into a third-world-styled justice system that goes after political opponents like you see in Russia or North Korea.”

Despite the clear rejection of the Russian regime in Patrick’s statement, Trump has been noted as an ally of Russia and has “consistently complimented Putin, expressed admiration for his dictatorial rule and gone out of his way to avoid criticizing him, most recently for the death in jail of political opponent Alexei Navalny,” according to the Washington Post.
