This weekend, many people in Mexico will be celebrating Mother’s Day, along with a large number of residents in Texas, especially in cities like Houston, where the cultural ties to Mexico are strong.
Mexican Mother’s Day is celebrated annually on May 10, just one day before Mother’s Day in the United States, which falls on Sunday this year.
The holiday became official in 1914 and gained national prominence after Rafael Alducin, an editor for Excélsior in Mexico, published an article in 1922 advocating for a day to honor mothers, according to the Mexico City-based newspaper.
Much like in the U.S., mothers in Mexico are celebrated with flowers, gifts, and songs, as a way for families to show appreciation, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
In Texas, especially in areas with large Mexican-American communities, it’s common for families to observe both days, honoring the traditions of their heritage while also participating in the broader U.S. celebration.
