Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was sentenced Thursday to 30 days in jail and five years of deferred adjudication probation, over a year after causing a multi-vehicle crash while racing on a Dallas highway. Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felonies: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury. He also agreed to pay over $115,000 in medical costs for the victims and must complete 60 hours of community service.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Rice’s attorney, state Sen. Royce West, said the sentence allows the player to coordinate his jail time around his work schedule, adding that Rice plans to report to Chiefs training camp next week. At a press conference, West read a statement from Rice in which the athlete took full responsibility for the March 2024 crash and apologized to the victims, the Chiefs organization, and the public.

“This was a moment of intense failure on my part,” Rice said.

The crash occurred on North Central Expressway, where police said Rice and then-SMU player Teddy Knox were driving at speeds up to 119 mph in a Lamborghini and a Corvette, respectively, before losing control and fleeing the scene. Both were later charged with multiple counts, including aggravated assault. The status of the charges against Knox remains unclear.

Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot said the incident underscores the danger of reckless driving, especially by public figures. Rice’s case remains under NFL review and the Chiefs declined to comment. Rice, 23 at the time of the crash, played four games in 2024 before a knee injury sidelined him for the season.
