U.S. Resumes Border Wall Construction In Texas Amid Security Push

In March 2025, the U.S. government awarded a $70 million contract to Granite Construction Co. to resume building seven miles of border wall in Hidalgo County, Texas. This initiative aims to complete sections left unfinished during previous administrations, reflecting ongoing debates over border security and immigration policy.

The U.S.-Mexico border wall has been a big issue. Only 453 miles of the 738 miles of wall that were originally planned were actually built, the majority of which were updated to already-existing sections. Because there was money left over that needed to be used, construction resumed in 2023 after halting during President Biden’s administration. This is the first contract signed during President Trump’s second term in office. The goal of this new project is to fill in significant gaps in the Rio Grande Valley, which is frequently the site of smuggling and illegal crossings.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, posted a video on X, saying the construction on the wall has begun, as first reported by CBS News.

“Everybody, I’m here in Arizona, and right at this spot you can see where the border wall ends,” Noem said. “As of today, we’re starting seven new miles of construction. We’re going to continue to make America safe again.”

According to The Houston Chronicle, in addition to the construction, the Pentagon has directed the USS Gravely, a Navy destroyer, to be positioned at the Gulf Coast close to the border between Texas and Mexico. This ship is being sent to help combat local drug cartels. This move demonstrates how much more actively the military is maintaining border security.

To improve border security, the U.S. administration is stepping up military presence and resuming border wall construction. These actions are intended to combat smuggling and stop unauthorized border crossings. However, local residents and environmental organizations are becoming concerned about this plan.
