Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath met with Turning Point USA Senior Director Josh Thifault on Nov. 3 in Austin to discuss the possibility of establishing chapters of the conservative youth organization in high schools across the state, reported The Texas Tribune.
The meeting occurred weeks after Thifault reached out to Morath to explore a potential partnership, highlighting Turning Point USA’s existing work in Florida and Oklahoma.
In a follow-up email, Thifault wrote, “Both states have issued stern warnings against anyone attempting to stop students from forming Club America chapters,” referring to the official name of the clubs.
It remains unclear whether Morath agreed to any formal partnership or outlined next steps.
Texas Education Agency spokesperson Jake Kobersky told The Texas Tribune, “Commissioner Morath meets with a variety of stakeholders interested in public education.”
Earlier this month, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick pledged $1 million in campaign funds to support the creation of Turning Point USA chapters in all Texas colleges and high schools. Texas has more than 1,200 public school districts and charters, educating roughly 5.5 million students, and over 200 colleges.
Ricky Adam Jr., Texas regional manager for Turning Point USA, told lawmakers on Nov. 12, “We will put a Turning Point USA or Club America in every single high school in the state. You have my word… We have a huge announcement just around the corner, so stay tuned.”
