This Texas Lakes Water Levels Hit 1960s Low!

Canyon Lake in Texas Hill Country is at a dramatic water level that has not been seen since the 1960s when it first opened. This lake is a popular swim spot impacted by the severe drought.

Canyon Lake is now at 59% capacity with a mean water level of 886.77 feet. The lake has dropped significantly from 76.4% full just a year ago.

“We are still in a severe drought, as we have been for well over a year,” Comal County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jen Crownover told MySA. “We need rain. When we do get rain, and the lake levels come back up, that’s when the ramps can re-open.”

He also said that the county is working on improving boat ramps while the water level is low.

Out of Canyon Lake’s 23 boat ramps, all 9 under Comal County’s supervision are closed due to the low water levels. Additionally, ramps managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers are also shut.

In Canyon Lake, people can usually enjoy activities like swimming, diving, fishing, hiking, camping, and boating. The lake reaches across 8,200 acres of surface area in Central Texas’ Hill Country.
