Three days after a mass shooting at Brown University left two dead and nine injured, authorities in Providence continue searching for the suspect. The investigation, described by officials as “active and complex,” is ongoing, with new leads emerging from recently released videos and images, according to The Providence Journal.
Newly released images and videos from Dec. 13 show a male suspect wearing a two-toned jacket, hat, black face mask, gloves, and a cross body bag, walking along Hope Street. Providence Police describe him as “armed and dangerous” and have not yet identified him.
The FBI has put forward a $50,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. Residents can submit tips via the Providence Police, the FBI hotline, or online.
Mayor Brett Smiley said the new videos generated many tips but offered no word on major breakthroughs. “The new video and images that went out last night have generated a lot of phone calls and we have many active tips that are being pursued,” he told The Providence Journal.
Police have been canvassing neighborhoods, knocking on doors, and increasing patrols across East Side areas including Fox Point, Wayland Square, Thayer Street, and Hope Street. Brown University remains in “restricted access mode” while investigations continue on campus.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks explained that leads are being tracked, evidence is being gathered on campus, and a lab in Quantico is reconstructing the scene, including bullet trajectories. Chief Col. Oscar Perez added, “There’s no one that wants to put this individual in handcuffs than us… every minute counts.”
Authorities report the suspect carried a 9mm handgun and had been near Barus & Holley Hall at least two hours before the shooting, and law enforcement believe Brown University was targeted.
Rhode Island Hospital has treated all nine injured victims. Two have been discharged; one is stable, five are in critical stable condition, and one remains critical.
Mayor Smiley urged the public to remain calm, emphasizing there is no new credible threat while police maintain enhanced coverage. Parents are encouraged to use the Providence 311 alert system, and students should follow campus safety protocols.
