How Will DEA’s Historic Move On Medical Marijuana Impact Texas

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is making waves with its decision to reclassify medical marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug. While this doesn’t legalize marijuana federally, it could be a huge shift in how cannabis is viewed and regulated.

Dr. Mathew Brimberry sees this as a positive step forward. As a family physician and medical director of the Texas Cannabis Clinic, he believes reclassification will lead to better research, less stigma, and increased access to safe medical cannabis for patients.

One of the key benefits of reclassification is the potential for more rigorous studies on cannabis’s medical applications. Currently, federal restrictions hinder comprehensive research, but this change could pave the way for groundbreaking discoveries in cannabis

From a medical standpoint, Dr. Brimberry emphasizes the positive impact medical cannabis has had on his patients. He cites cases ranging from autistic children finding relief to multiple sclerosis patients managing pain and spasticity effectively.

Moreover, reclassification could shift the conversation around cannabis use, offering an alternative to addictive opioids. In Texas alone, millions of potential patients could benefit from medical cannabis, but current restrictions limit access.

While the Texas Legislature holds the ultimate authority over cannabis laws in the state, there’s hope that federal reclassification could influence lawmakers to expand medical marijuana access. The existing infrastructure in Texas, including prescription requirements and software systems, positions the state well for such changes.

With this new classification, more Texas cities could begin decriminalizing marijuana.

Recently, The Texas Tribune reported that Lubbock will vote on a proposed ordinance that would decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. This would stop the arrest of people possessing less than 4 ounces of marijuana.
