Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost has been elected the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Leo XIV, as announced from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti. Originally from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV becomes the second pope from the Americas and the first Augustinian to lead the Church. Known for his missionary work in Peru, Pope Leo XIV has held significant roles in both pastoral and Vatican leadership, including serving as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and a close advisor within the Roman Curia.
Since his election, Pope Leo XIV’s online activity has drawn attention for its clarity and moral urgency. On April 14, 2025, he retweeted a post criticizing the deportation of a U.S. resident: “Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed? How can you stay quiet?”
In a separate post, Leo XIV stressed Senator JD Vance on immigration, stating, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others,” sharing an article from National Catholic Reporter which explains: “When Jesus speaks of family, it’s not defined by blood or borders but by kinship in God. When someone tells him his mother and brothers are waiting to speak with him, Jesus points to his disciples: “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (Mt 12:48-50).”
His public stance suggests a papacy attuned to the ethical dimensions of global migration and human dignity.
His election signals continuity with a pastoral and globally-minded papacy, with many observers noting his deep theological training, cross-cultural ministry experience, and commitment to ecclesial service rooted in the teachings of Saint Augustine.
