Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered the deployment of state troopers and Texas National Guard personnel to Austin ahead of a planned protest at the state Capitol on Saturday, part of the nationwide “No Kings Day” rallies.

The “No Kings Day” protest is part of a nationwide movement organized to oppose what participants describe as authoritarian and anti-democratic actions associated with former President Donald Trump. The protest is scheduled from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. and is one of nearly 100 expected across Texas.

According to KUT News, Abbott characterized the protest as an “antifa-linked demonstration” and said law enforcement would be equipped with “all necessary” personnel and tactical resources to prevent violence and property damage.

He addressed the situation on X:

“Violence and destruction will never be tolerated in Texas,” Abbott said in an official statement.

“Today, I directed the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas National Guard to deploy all necessary law enforcement officials and resources to ensure the safety of Austin residents.”

In response, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson voiced concern over what he called the “militarization” of the city. Through an X post, Watson confirmed that National Guard troops would remain on standby and only engage if an emergency situation arises.

“I don’t condone the militarization of our streets,” Watson said, while also condemning any potential violence or property damage.
