On Friday, June 25th, Vice President Kamala Harris is set to visit El Paso alongside Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. This was confirmed in a statement by her chief spokesperson on Wednesday. The details and agenda of the visit have not been confirmed.
After returning from her first trip abroad since taking office, to visit Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month, Ms. Harris aims to continue to address President Biden’s request to lead an effort to improve conditions in Central America in order to reduce migration to the United States.
Mr. Biden’s administration has been struggling to safely process unaccompanied minors at the border since he took office in January and requested Vice President Harris to address this issue as well. She and her advisors have justified her actions regarding the matter, claiming that she is focused on alleviating poverty conditions and persecution that forces vulnerable people to flee their homes.
Ms. Harris isn’t the only high-profile politician planning a trip to the U.S.-Mexico border. Later this month, former President Donald J. Trump and Gov. Abbott recently announced they will take a tour around the southern border as well.
