Abbott’s Approval Rating Plummets 26 Points Since April

Gov. Greg Abbott is now listed among 12 governors with “notably” low approval ratings. Back in April, Abbott’s approval rating stood at 61%. At the end of August, it was 35%, putting him in the same company as the governors of Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi, Oregon, Oklahoma, Missouri and South Carolina, which all have approval ratings below 40%.

Although members of his own party are more forgiving, they, too, have lost confidence in the job he’s doing. In April, he received an approval rating of about 85% from Republicans. Today, that has fallen to under 75%. Among Democrats, the number is about 20%.

The COVID-19 Consortium for Understanding the Public’s Policy Preferences Across States conducted the survey. It is a joint project of Northeastern University, Harvard University, Rutgers University, and Northwestern University.

The group surveyed 21,196 individuals across all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. The survey was conducted August 7-26 by PureSpectrum via an online, nonprobability sample, with state-level representative quotas for race/ethnicity, age, and gender.
