Talk of a special legislative session is gaining momentum as Gov. Greg Abbott and top Republicans face pressure to tackle redistricting, a lobbying ban, and new abortion restrictions.
Two GOP members of Congress told Quorum Report they expect a special session on redistricting, though the timing remains unclear. Over the weekend, Abbott also told the Harris County GOP that a special session could include a proposed ban on taxpayer-funded lobbying — a long-standing priority for conservatives.
Meanwhile, anti-abortion groups are urging the governor to take action against abortion pill access, pushing him to include it in the call.
According to a New York Times report, Donald Trump’s advisors are pressing Texas leaders to redraw the state’s congressional map in hopes of helping Republicans gain more seats in the U.S. House. Texas Republicans currently hold 25 of the state’s 38 congressional districts.
But redrawing districts mid-decade — something Texas last did in 2003 — would require a special session and could trigger infighting among Republicans. Some fear the move could stretch red areas too thin and risk losses in future elections.
Democrats argue the current map, passed in 2021, already favors Republicans. An ongoing federal lawsuit claims it disenfranchises Black and Latino voters.
While some congressional Republicans appear hesitant, The Times reports that Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton have all recently discussed redistricting. A special session could come as soon as next month, according to Rep. Ron Reynolds.
