Gov. Greg Abbott told members of the Texas House Republican Caucus that President Donald Trump will endorse Rep. Dustin Burrows not only for re-election but also for Speaker of the House, according to multiple sources familiar with the meeting.
The endorsement is tied to support for Abbott’s priority school voucher legislation. Burrows played a key role in advancing this year’s school voucher legislation, helping push Senate Bill 2 through the House. The bill passed under his leadership—marking a contrast from last year, when similar legislation failed under then-Speaker Dade Phelan.
The news was first reported by Brad Johnson of The Texan, who noted that Abbott told GOP members Trump would back “everyone who voted for SB 2,” with a specific nod to Burrows for a potential speakership bid.
