Texodus: Why Are Californians Flocking To Texas In Record Numbers?

Californians and people from coastal cities are making Texas their new home, as they seek a cheaper way of living.

It’s not news that people from the Golden State are starting to move to Texas, but recent data shows that the numbers are huge. According to a report by the CHRON, more than 102,000 Californians moved to Texas in 2022, while little more than 42,000 Texans moved to the Golden State in the same year.

In addition, more than 30,000 Newyorkers moved to Texas in the same year, while only 12,000 Texans moved to New York. A lot of people from large cities are moving to Texas, why is this happening?

Well, both California and New York have higher costs of living and Texas is cheaper. Movers seek a more affordable place to live in the south and the southwest, but this also has implications for Texans.

The “Texodus” also drove housing prices up in Texas, especially in large cities such as Austin, and some residents have been pushed out of the city and into the suburbs. A report by the real estate company Redfin noted that when the Texodus started, “home prices skyrocketed and many homebuyers were priced out.”

Still, even with prices going up, Texas cities are expected to grow even larger than New York, and while migration from other states is an important factor, Austin, Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth will grow naturally as the three biggest cities in the US, according to some studies.
