Hay Will Keep Pets Safe And Warm As Winter Arrives

With the arrival of the cold season, everyone wants to stay warm. Unfortunately, not all pets can escape the freezing temperatures.

Texas’ significant number of backyard pets appears to be increasing. It’s highly important to be aware that outdoor pets, especially dogs, are at risk during extreme weather conditions. Animal welfare advocates often raise awareness about the importance of proper shelter, food, and water for any pets kept outside. It’s the owner’s responsibility to listen to the recommendations and protect their pets.

For pets that need to remain outdoors, make sure they have a sheltered space that is dry, well-insulated, and equipped with a roof and an elevated floor to keep them off the cold ground. Additionally, providing warm apparel like jackets or sweaters can help smaller or short-haired breeds stay cozy during freezing weather.

The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center (LACAC) is stepping up to support pet owners during the cold season by providing hay for those unable to bring their pets indoors.

“Hay is a valuable resource during colder temperatures as it serves as a natural insulator,” LACAC told KETK News. “When placed in dog houses or barns, it helps keep pets warm by trapping heat.”

Hay is a very accessible resource. Pet owners in need can request it from the East Texas animal care center, buy it online, or find it for sale in pet supply stores.

For additional support, East Texas warming shelters are also open to assist during the cold weather, for those in need, and to pick up hay you can call animal control at 903-397-1290 from 8 to 5 P.M.
