Rep. Sarah Davis Endorsed by Human Rights Campaign

State Rep. Sarah Davis Endorsed by Largest LGBTQ Advocacy Group Nationwide

In her reelection bid for Houston’s House District 134, State Rep. Sarah Davis was endorsed by the largest LGBTQ advocacy group in the nation. The Human Rights Campaign is “America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality.”  The Human Rights Campaign’s endorsement on Thursday came only nine days after Republican Gov. Greg Abbott endorsed Davis, despite publicly opposing her in 2018.

A powerful statement came from Rebecca Marques, HRC’s Texas state director who shared with the Houston Chronicle, “Sarah Davis has stood alongside LGBTQ activists in Texas at every opportunity, even if that meant bucking her own party leadership.” Adding to her support for Davis, Marques included, “…having leaders and allies on both sides of the aisle is incredibly important in achieving the change that Texans and LGBTQ people need.”

Davis is the first Republican nationwide to earn support from The Human Rights Campaign for the 2020 election cycle. HRC has typically endorsed a Democratic candidate, but when asked by the Houston Chronicle why it was endorsing Davis, Marques stated, “HRC’s goal in Texas has always been to elect a pro-equality majority, not necessarily a Democratic majority.”
In response to the endorsement from HRC and the LGBTQ community, Davis, shared on Twitter, “Honored to receive this endorsement! Respecting the dignity of every person is a value that I hold personally, and one that is shared by my constituents.
