Uncontested: No Choice for Voters in Kyle Biedermann’s District

In Texas House District 73, incumbent Kyle Biedermann (R-Fredericksburg) is running unopposed. If Biedermann secures another win in 2020, likely without a challenger, he will be elected to serve his third term.

Biedermann defeated Democratic challenger Stephanie Phillips in 2018 by a 50 percent margin. He won the seat initially in 2016 with no challenger in the general election.

American democracy is entrenched in the fundamental principle that citizens are involved in decision-making with the power to elect an individual to represent them. Without a variety of candidates to align with and choose from, citizens lose their power to be heard.

Representative Biedermann has a history of controversial votes, and most recently, has repeatedly voted against disaster relief measures. In 2019, Biedermann voted against a bill that would authorize financial assistance to disaster-area political subdivisions. In the same post Hurricane Harvey session, Biedermann voted against grants to food banks for disaster response.

Without a challenger from the opposing side, House District 73 is stuck with Kyle Biedermann. Citizens should have a choice and the opportunity to vote for a candidate that aligns with their views, not a candidate that votes against community efforts. Diversity in elected officials is imperative when it comes to moderating the legislature and balancing the playing field.

The filing deadline for candidates, December 9, 2019, is approaching quickly.
