Ted Cruz’s campaign team said they are fighting for their lives shortly after a poll showed U.S. Rep. Colin Allred leading him in the Senate race.
In a post on X, the official account for Cruz’s reelection campaign posted a link to his campaign’s fundraising stating “November 5th is almost here! We are in the fight of our lives.”
This post comes after a Morning Consult poll showed Allred with a one-point lead over Cruz. This was the first poll to show Allred leading Cruz in the Senate race.
After the poll made numerous headlines, some Republicans acknowledged the race was closer than expected.
Travis County GOP chair Matt Mackowiak said Republicans were “very antsy” because of Cruz’s performance in the race.
I do expect Cruz to win, but this is a lot closer than it needs to be,” he told Ryan Chandler of KXAN. “It is scaring us.” He added that Trump will win Texas by a wide margin and that will carry Cruz across, but he said Cruz would very likely underperform Trump.
Donald Trump’s campaign manager, Chris LaCivita, also expressed frustration with Cruz’s performance in Texas.
“What the hell is wrong with the Senate race in Texas? I think I know… and I think I know his name… time to get some real professionals in to save Ted Cruz,” he wrote on X.
Despite the concerns, Cruz is still favored to win the election. The election prediction market Polymarket gives Cruz an 80% probability of winning the election. However, there are still many variables that could turn the tide in Allred’s favor.
Both candidates agreed to their first televised debate, which could help their lead. The debate will take place three weeks before the Nov. 5 election on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at the WFAA studios in Dallas.
