U.S Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, announced last month that he would no longer be running for candidacy in the 35th Congressional District, changing his race to the newly created 37th Congressional District, which encompasses much of Austin.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, D-Austin – who has represented portions of Austin since 2003 – announced on Wednesday his candidacy for the 35th Congressional District, joining Austin City Council Member Greg Casar in the Democratic primary for the open seat.
“I’m running for Congress because we need strong, progressive leadership that will get things done on issues that matter most to our future,” said Rodriguez, as reported by Austin American-Statesman.
Rodriguez said he wants to provide Texans with economic and educational opportunities to make a better future for East Austin’s families. He wishes to combate climate change, and champion abortion access and economic justice.
The 35th Congressional District runs from East Austin to downtown San Antonio along Interstate 35 and was drawn to favor Democratic candidates.
