Nikki Haley Says She’ll Vote for Trump, Despite Previously Saying He’s “Not Qualified” To Be President

In a significant turn of events for the 2024 presidential race, former United Nations Ambassador and GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley has announced her intention to vote for former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November election. This endorsement could potentially shift the dynamics of the race, as Haley’s support base has remained robust even after she suspended her campaign.

Impact on the GOP Primary Landscape

Haley’s endorsement is crucial for Trump, who has faced challenges in garnering support from her voter base during recent GOP primaries. Despite halting her campaign, Haley has consistently garnered approximately 20% of the vote in GOP primary contests. Her influence is particularly notable in key suburban counties in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Georgia, swing states that are likely to play a decisive role in the election, as they did back in 2020.

Haley’s Statement and Its Implications

During a conversation at the Hudson Institute, Haley acknowledged that while Trump has not been “perfect” on several policies, including foreign policy and immigration, she views President Biden’s tenure as a “catastrophe.” She stated unequivocally, “I will be voting for Trump,” while urging Trump to actively seek the support of her voters, emphasizing the importance of outreach and unity within the party.

Haley’s remarks mark her first public appearance since suspending her presidential campaign in March. Despite the historical tension and sharp criticisms exchanged between Haley and Trump during their campaigns, Haley’s endorsement, as De Santis’  demonstrates a strategic and cowardly decision to back the GOP frontrunner, reflecting a pragmatic approach to the political realities of the 2024 race.

Broader Political Context

Haley’s strong standing among moderate Republicans and Republican-leaning independents has increased the pressure on her to declare her support for a candidate. Her decision to back Trump comes as the Biden campaign actively courts Haley’s supporters, running targeted digital ads in swing states.

The Biden-Harris campaign, recognizing the potential shift in voter dynamics, has attempted to capitalize on the uncertainty within the GOP. Michael Tyler, communications director for the Biden-Harris campaign, highlighted the persistent division among Republican voters and emphasized the Biden administration’s commitment to working across party lines.

Haley’s Political Journey and Future Prospects

Haley’s journey in the GOP primary was marked by a bitter feud with Trump, during which she questioned his mental fitness and criticized his handling of various issues. Despite these confrontations, Haley has chosen to support Trump, reflecting a broader strategy to maintain influence within the party and shape its future direction.

In her speech at the Hudson Institute, Haley also addressed broader geopolitical issues, expressing strong support for Israel and criticizing President Biden’s approach to military aid. She urged the GOP to back military aid for Ukraine and Israel, an issue in which former President Trump has not been particularly supportive.

Since stepping back from the race, Haley has focused on reconnecting with her family, particularly her husband, Michael, who recently returned from a yearlong overseas deployment. Her continued support in Republican primaries, even in her absence, signals her enduring influence and the potential challenge Trump faces in unifying the party between far-right radicals and moderates.
