Freshman U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a member of the House Oversight Committee, has been blowing up the internet when she stood up to defend herself against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who commented on Crockett’s “fake eyelashes.”
“I’ve had things that have gone viral as I was sitting in committee,” Crockett said, as first reported by The Dallas Morning News. “Nothing like this.”
During a debate whether to hold the U.S. Attorney Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for not providing recordings of President Biden’s conversations with special counsel Robert Hur. Greene accused Crockett of misreading due to her eyelashes.
“I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading,” Greene said.
Despite Democratic objections, committee chairman Rep. James Comer ruled Greene’s remark did not violate decorum rules.
So Crockett responded sharply: “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach-blond, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”
Crockett’s response sent her phone buzzing with messages from supporters and the phrase quickly gained traction online, leading to parody remixes and merchandise.
Crockett’s campaign even filed an application to trademark the six-word phrase.
Crockett has embraced supporters and said that “people were just finally excited to see a bully cut down to size.” She noted Greene’s history of making controversial remarks and suggested Comer might reconsider his leniency toward Greene.
Crockett is also looking for ways to capitalize on the incident by launching a fundraising campaign, selling merchandise featuring her now-famous retort and other memorable quotes.
In contrast, Greene posted a video showcasing her physical fitness, asserting her body’s strength comes from a healthy lifestyle rather than cosmetic enhancements.
“Yes, my body is built and strong. NOT with nips, tucks, plastic, or silicone, but through a healthy lifestyle,” Greene wrote.
