Texans in the Black Hats

Almost every news story and op-ed since last week is dissecting the Harris-Trump debate.

The laudatory mentions and the most recent polls make it appear Kamala will win the election, but it’s not a simple slam dunk. It’s only now, 42 days from Election Day that the real work (on your part) begins. And it’s imperative that we recognize the villains, especially in our own state. The clock is ticking loudly.

Texas is ground zero for fascism and dictatorial rule. It’s been a petri dish for Project2025 which Texans have tolerated for almost 30 years, yet, we’re so close to flipping the Texas House with only 12 seats remaining to gain the Texas House majority. Conversely, Texas is by far the most complicated, confusing, and needlessly complex state when registering to vote, and the actual voting experience is worse. Worst of all, the voter turnout is always low—44 out of 51.

There are many lawmakers and those in leadership positions in Texas who are somewhat responsible for this continuing trend. They are guilty of the misrepresentation, the lying, the cheating, the misinformation and the spin of democratic policies that would help everyday Texans.

A few lie about their district of residence, rumor has it; Nate Schatzline and Briscoe Cain. Residency challenges are not often successful in a court of law, but they can be on the campaign trail, according to many political science professors. Schatzline, whose background is heavily religious, is friends with Corey DeAngelis who, recently, was discovered to be a gay porn actor. Republicans are strongly hypocritical.

In a leadership role, the Texas Trinity, Abbott, Patrick, and Paxton, all wear black hats and have for some time.

Ken Paxton is setting the courts on fire with cases involving voter suppression. It was a travesty of justice that Paxton was not impeached last year. Dan Patrick helped save him. He bullied legislators to find Paxton innocent. This next session of the Texas Legislature is going to be wild. Dems are only 12 races away from being the majority in the Legislature because Texans are so disgusted with this group of lawmakers. That NEEDS TO HAPPEN. When Republicans create NO policies which motivates voters to vote for them, they instead resort to stealing. The courts are dealing with him RIGHT NOW. His actions will not stand. Door to door raids on grandmothers are attempts to suppress voting, with the excuse that he is doing it to protect the state from election fraud that’s impossible to prove. Election integrity, my foot…

Dan Patrick: The Houston media named him “the silver-tongued devil” with good reason. He’s largely responsible for Rush Limbaugh’s climb to fame. He’s virtually declared war on public and higher education and the Texas Legislature went right along. DEI gone. Tenure gone. CRT gone. His handling of the Ken Paxton case was an egregious act of quid pro quo in a state that regularly tolerates that action. And it was the gas to propel Ken Paxton to more egregious acts, thinking that he’s Teflon now.

Greg Abbott, from Jade Helm to labeling a Venezuelan gang a terrorist group, sows fear and uses labels to disparage anything that’s a Federal Government issue and deceives about federal money by giving those funds the appearance that he granted them. To list all the bad things he’s accomplished would be another entire opinion piece.

Remember the key to winning is to SHOW UP on all the meetings regarding issues of your concern. Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare proposed eliminating ballot locations on college campuses earlier this month. His official reasoning was that the campus locations were poorly attended and students could easily vote elsewhere to save the county money.  He called a hearing TWICE when most Democratic members could not be present, but when a crowd of Texans showed up at the last meeting, the measure was shut down cold.

MOST OF ALL, it’s making sure you’re on the voting rolls and then GO VOTE.

  • October 7: Last day to register to vote.
  • October 21: First day to early vote.
  • October 25: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot.
  • November 1: Last day to early vote.
  • November 5: Election Day!

Look here…I’m a 7th generation Texan, but even I realize how primitive this state has become because of its leadership. I’m educated. I read. I travel. It’s not that hard to see the vast difference between Texas and other places. Come into the 21st century, Texans. It won’t hurt you, I promise.

The sleepy, dusty town of Lubbock, Texas, in the late fifties, was the perfect incubator for a shy, imaginative child who was a voracious reader with a dream of becoming a writer. Carol Morgan spent almost 30 years as a teacher and counselor, but even in her stint as an educator she continued to write. She was the executive producer of Career Connection, an education program on LISD-TV. In 2001, Carol began a second career as a career counselor, writer and speaker. Her goal was to encourage others to use their gifts and talents to make changes in their lives and the world. That business endured for 20 years until closing because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She was the host of a local radio talk show, Career 411, offering on-air advice and featuring unique careers. As a freelance writer, she’s contributed articles to various publications about Texas politics and life. Carol was the Democratic candidate for the Texas House of Representatives in 2010, and has never recovered from her addiction to Texas politics. She is the author of two books, garnering honors and awards for her writings.
