On X/Twitter, the account of the planned “Department of Government Efficiency” or DOGE has a “verified government account” badge, despite it not being an existing government department and it is still unclear whether it will exist in the future.
Elon Musk has championed the idea of the DOGE –named after a meme and a cryptocurrency–, saying it will help cut up to $2 trillion in spending. Thanks to the billionaire’s pleas and pressure, president-elect Donald Trump said he would appoint Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy as heads of the DOGE.
Currently, the DOGE does not exist, and it is unclear whether it would be a consolidated department in the future. However, the DOGE has an account on X/Twitter –platform under Musk’s control– with already 1.5 million followers and a “verified” badge that reads:
“This account is verified because it is a government or multilateral organization account.”
According to the Washington Post, it likely wont be a federal executive department, and thus not would need approval for the Congress. Instead, it could act as an advisory role, according to CBS News. However, it is still unclear how the hypothetical organization would help cut spending, as those are matters that need the approval of the Congress.
Musk has grown more influential now that has donated millions of dollars to Trump’s campaign and helped reelect him. It is possible that this department is a way for Trump to pay Musk back, however, it is still unclear how many power the billionaire will hold over the President and other government branches.
The official DOGE account posted on X is soliciting applications for people wanting to work there. The planned department notes that those interested, should be “willing to work 80+ hours per week” and to be “super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries.”
In addition to those conditions, people interested in working with the planned organization must have a paid X subscription to be able to send their resumes.
