Elon Musk Builds a Compound for His Big Family, Even if Some Might Not Call It Home

Elon Musk has bought an enormous street compound in Austin for his 11 children and their three mothers and has been offering his sperm to friends and acquaintances amid his obsession with declining birth rates and big families.

According to an investigation by the New York Times, Musk bought a 14,400-square-foot mansion “that looks like a villa plucked from the hills of Tuscany,” and another six-bedroom mansion next to it to accommodate his family. The total cost of these properties was about $35 million.

People familiar with the matter say Musk wanted to have a space where all his children could interact with each other. However, the billionaire’s plan might face one small problem: he is estranged from some of his children.

With his first wife, Justine Musk, the billionaire had five children using in vitro fertilization (IVF): twins Griffin and Vivian, now 20, and triplets, Saxon, Damian and Kai in their late teens. He also had three children with musician Grimes and three with Shivon Zilis, an executive at Neuralink, one of Musk’s companies.

From these children at least one, Vivian, is estranged from Musk and has said her father is “cruel,” “cold,” “narcissistic,” and “uncaring” in a post on Threads. She also said he was barely present in her life and left her mother to care for her and her siblings.

Musk’s move to buy a big complex for his children follows his growing belief that having a big family is important and that the greatest threat to humanity is declining birth rates. He has called for people to have plenty of children to save humanity from destruction, though scientists have said declining birth rates are not going to destroy humanity.

Musk has tasked himself to have as many children as possible. Reportedly, he has offered his sperm to friends and acquaintances, including Nicole Shanahan, the former running mate of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. According to The New York Times, Shanahan declined the billionaire’s offer.

He also told superstar Taylor Swift he’ll give her a child after she endorsed Kamala Harris.

“Fine Taylor…you win…I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life,” he wrote on his social media website X.

The New York Times also reported that Musk might have become obsessed with big families because of his father Errol Musk, who had seven children with two different women, one of them his former stepdaughter.
