Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has contributed $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund, marking a notable development in the often contentious relationship between the tech giant and Trump.
The donation, confirmed by CBS and first reported by The Wall Street Journal, is intended to support events and activities surrounding Trump’s swearing-in as the 47th president of the United States on January 20. The fund, typically used to host inaugural ceremonies, has drawn criticism from some who see such contributions as a way to gain favor with new administrations.
This marks a departure from Meta’s historical approach. The company, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, did not make similar contributions to President Joe Biden’s 2020 inauguration fund or Trump’s 2016 inaugural fund.
Relations between Trump and Zuckerberg have been fraught in recent years. In 2021, Meta suspended Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram, citing concerns over his remarks following the January 6 Capitol riots.
Recent interactions suggest a thawing of tensions. Zuckerberg met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November, signaling an effort to mend ties. Trump, in turn, acknowledged Zuckerberg’s efforts, noting in a podcast interview that it was “nice” the tech leader was “staying out of the election.”
