Texas State Capitol Grounds Reopened after 6 months of Closed Doors

In a recent press release, the State Preservation Board announced that The Capitol Grounds were now open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the Capitol Visitors Center opened Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

However, in an ongoing effort to reduce exposure to the COVID-19 contagion, the State Preservation Board stated that the Texas State Capitol including the Capitol Grill would remain closed to the public until further notice.

Even though the grounds were open after the closing of the surrounding buildings earlier this year, they were ultimately closed at the end of May following protests which caused injury to Texas Department of Public Safety personnel, destruction of state property and damage to the Capitol building.

As staff and elected officials are still able to enter the Capitol for essential activities, the State Preservation Board reports they will continue to monitor public health officials’ protocols for containing community transmission of the COVID-19 virus and respond accordingly.

The Capitol Grounds, Capitol Visitors Center, Bullock Museum and Texas State Cemetery are currently open to the public.
