So far, Texas athletes have claimed more medals than most countries participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
According to Kxan, by Monday, Texas’ native athletes and those who trained or competed at Texas Universities have won a total of 30 medals, which is just below Australia and above countries such as Japan, Italy and South Korea. Texas has achieved about a third of the U.S. medals.
According to WFAA, if Texas was a country, it would be the eighth participant with the most gold medals, surpassing countries like Italy and Germany.
However, the report also counts athletes that have trained in Texas Universities, or competed at them. Some of those athletes are representing other countries, like Saint Lucia, Hungary or Germany.
For example, Hubert Kos of Hungary won the gold medal in the swimming men’s 200m backstroke.
However there are prominent athletes raised in Texas like Simone Biles from Spring. She won the gold medal at gymnastics for women’s artistic team all-around, women’s artistic all-around, and women’s vault. With 11 Olympic medals in all of her games, she is tied with Czechoslovak Věra Čáslavská as the second-most decorated female Olympic gymnast.
With 30 medals, Texas has become one of the places where athletes can train and excel. With a rich sports culture, strong athletic programs and a supportive community, athletes of other states and countries can thrive.
These games showed that Texas is an ideal place for athletes aiming to compete at the highest levels, including the Olympics.
