Beto O’Rourke to Hold a Voting Rights Rally in Austin this Afternoon

Former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke is inviting everyone in the state to a voting rights rally in Austin this afternoon.

On Sunday, June 20, at 5:30 p.m., O’Rourke will hold a rally on the south steps of the Texas Capitol, 1100 Congress Avenue. He aims to rally a large group of people to send a message to Congress and President Joe Biden, urging them to support the For the People Act.

“Voting rights are under attack here in Texas and across the nation,” says on the event’s page, “Join voting rights and civil rights leaders for a voting rights demonstration in Austin to fight back against voter suppression legislation.”

The For the People Act (also known as H.R. 1) is a measure introduced in Congress with the goal of expanding voting rights, changing campaign finance laws to lessen the influence of money in politics, limiting gerrymandering, and establishing new ethical regulations for federal officeholders.

Voting rights groups and Democrats in Washington have recently suggested that the filibuster — the requirement of a 60-vote majority – should be abolished in the Senate.
