It has become increasingly difficult for Texans to exercise the right to vote as a record number of polling places have closed. The state tops the nation in shutting down polling sites – closing 750 locations since 2013. Civil rights advocates warn this will disenfranchise voters. 
In the 86th Legislative Session, Texas lawmakers passed legislation prohibiting local governments from setting up temporary polling locations. In the past, mobile and temporary voting centers helped provide better voting access to rural and under-served communities in Texas, including college students and the elderly. Two new Democratic groups and a former Austin city manager have filed suit against the Texas Secretary of State’s office, arguing the bill suppresses the vote of many disenfranchised groups.

Five candidates have filed to run for the special election for State House District 125, which was called by Governor Greg Abbott to fill the vacancy created when State Representative Justin Rodriguez (D – San Antonio) resigned.

State Representative Justin Rodriguez (D - San Antonio) was selected by Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff last Friday, January 4th to replace County Commissioner Paul Elizondo, who died two weeks ago. Rodriguez was sworn into office immediately thereafter, and is leaving his seat in the Texas House.

Abbott Calls Special Election to Replace Pickett

On Friday, December 21st, Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation announcing Tuesday, January 29, 2019 as the special election date to fill the Texas House of Representatives District soon to be vacated by Representative Joe Pickett, who is retiring from the Legislature.

Alvarado Sworn In As Senator, Special Election for Her House Seat Looms

On Friday, December 21st in Austin, Carol Alvarado (D-Houston) was sworn in as the new Texas Senator for District 6, and also resigned her seat as the Texas House Member from District 145. Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation announcing Tuesday, January 29, 2019 as the special election date to fill the Texas House of Representatives District seat recently vacated by former Representative Carol Alvarado.
